Students learn more about bass fishing

On December 7 and 8 the Southern Fishing News Student Angler Series fishing class was held at the LDS church in Florence, AL, for mostly beginner student anglers, and with team members of the Brooks High School Bass Team, Killen, AL.

Thirty-four students attended the classes in addition to quite a few adults.

The first class began with tying a knot to secure their line to a lure. Tying the knot was demonstrated with a rope so the procedure could be easily seen. Next, the students paired off with one acting as the “hook” and the other attempting to tie the knot as had been

demonstrated. Each pair was provided a length of small diameter rope to practice with. Almost every fledgling bass angler tied the knot correctly on the first try. A few others got the knot tied correctly on the second try. However, instructor intervention was necessary with a couple of the pairs when the knot was tied so tightly blood circulation might have been interrupted in their partner’s arm that was acting as the hook.

Time was then devoted to familiarizing the youth with some of the variety and use of lures and hooks used in fishing/bass fishing with the help of prepared, computer slides projected on a screen. Additional instruction was given on finesse fishing, fishing “rigs”, when to use, rod selection and putting a plastic worm on a hook.

The class for the Brooks High School Bass Team of course required a higher skill level

approach. The team members in attendance learned about the additional skill set of finesse fishing, the tools used, when to use it and the several combinations of presentations possible.

The Brooks team members also got a look at other lures and their uses. Proper hook and plastic attachment was demonstrated and practiced. Several of the adults in attendance seemed to be enjoying the information and presentation as most of the student anglers were.

Perhaps the highlight, no, not perhaps, but definitely the highlight of the classes were the
